The Ministry of natural resources and climate change through the department of climate change and metrological services has alerted people in the Southern region about the development of a new tropical storm called Dumako.
The caution has mostly been sent to districts more especially Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Blantyre, Neno and Mwanza and some parts of the eastern region that from Friday 18th to Saturday 19th February, there will be maximum rainfall expected may reach 100mm.
Though the tropical storm Dumako is said not to be as intense as tropical Ana, Dumako may renew flash floods and read to new flooding concerns mainly in the Lower Shire.
According to the statement from DCCMS that MIJ Online has seen, this is due to the tropical Dumako which developed in Indian ocean and made landfall on Madagascar.
‘’Though the storm has weakened weather models indicate that remnants of Dumako may emerge in the next two days through Mozambique and drift towards Mozambique cost and any westward movement towards Mozambique cost may pose a threat to Malawi mostly in the mentioned areas.’’ reads the statement.
Meanwhile the DCCMS says it will monitor its movement and strength any possible changes that may impact Malawi will be communicated to the nation accordingly.
