Unrests over wood milling in Nyika Park

There are disagreements on contractual agreements permitting the milling of soft-wood timber at Nyika National Park in Rumphi district.
While members of the community through the young human rights defenders’ network has given government seven days to revisit the contract that was awarded to Takula Building Contractors and General Dealers, owner of the company Esther Kathumba has faulted communities for their failure to haul timber that is allocated to them.
Meanwhile, Melvin Nyumayo chairperson of the young human rights defenders’ network has told MIJ Online that the company is failing to meet some contractual agreements like corporate social responsibility thus asking government to suspend all milling activities pending review of the contract.
However, Esther Kathumba of Takula Building Contractors and General Dealers has told MIJ FM that there is no term of corporate social responsibility in the contract thus dismissing concerns that her company is failing to fulfil the same.
