Youths intensify tree planting initiative
A group of 22 young people are running a campaign Sustain Green Campaign with a target of planting one million trees across the country more especially in areas highly affected by deforestation.

Considering that issues of afforestation require sustainability under the campaign, the young people are working with schools in sensitizing the learners in the role of ensuring that the future is free of the ills of deforestation.
Speaking to MIJ Online Christina Mabvuto, Public Officer for the Sustain Green Initiative says that until the young people are made aware of the challenges that await them in the future, they will do nothing about changing the current situation.
“For a long time, young people have felt like issues of afforestation are the older people but as an initiative we critically reviewed the effects that can be faced in the future if this altitude continues that is why we always work with learners in the schools to understand that they have a role to play in planting for the future” she said.
On their resource mobilization Mabvuto was quick to say that their have relied heavily on the corporate world with General Alliance Insurance Limited as the main partner.
In the current tree planting season, the group has already planted trees in areas like Machinjiri, Namiwawa school, Mbayani primary school, Mbayani Community and Mudi River.
Mabvuto said they have gone as far as Neno courtesy of United Motors with the tree planting drive.
“Thanks to Malawi Land rovers Defender Club that provided transport to Neno we managed to reach out there and we hoping that in the near future people will appreciate these initiatives.’’ She added.
Meanwhile, Mabvuto has called upon the corporate world to assist them as the urgently need to plant trees in Michiru, Makata, Kuntaya, Somba, Kapeni and Chigaru in Blantyre.
