Students at the University of Malawi have been ordered to leave the campus after management announced a temporal closure of the institution in the wake of vigils the students have been holding in protest against a length holiday calendar.
The students have been pushing management to revise the academic calendar which would see them go for a five-month holiday as there is another cohort to attend studies during the same period.
A statement from the institution signed by the University’s Registrar Mary Wasiri says the decision to close the institution arise from security threats the vigils posed to the university and surrounding community.
Meanwhile, all students have been directed to vacate the institution’s premises by noon today.
