The Commissioner of police for Southwest Region Richard Luhanga has asked police officers to always be professional and to refrain from fraudulent acts when executing their duty.

Luhanga made the remarks at a police unit handover ceremony by the Chinese Community in Blantyre.

The Commissioner was speaking at the official handing over ceremony of Chigodi Police Unit which has been constructed with aid from the Chinese community.

Luhanga thanked the Chinese community for constructing the police unit which has been put to its feet with money to the tune of K32 million.

He has since advised police officers who will be assigned to work at the formation to always work together with members of the community if the fight against crime is to be won.

As if that was not enough, the Commissioner bemoans mob justice, saying this is uncalled for, and jeopardizes police investigations.

Luhanga stressing a point.

He also requested officers to take good care of the facility.

Speaking earlier, the Officer In-Charge for Limbe Police Station, Gladson Chipumphula, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) also thanked the Chinese Community for the gesture, saying this will go a long way in assisting the community.

He therefore advised police officers to make sure they provide real security and not cosmetic security. He stressed that those assigned to work at the facility have a ministry to serve God’s people.

The Officer In-Charge further bemoaned the tendency of torching police structures by a few unscrupulous people, saying this must stop since it is retrogressive.

The OC said if the people vandalise or torch police formations, is themselves that suffer.

“Don’t think that if you drink poison, it’s other people who will die, but it’s you who has taken the poison who is going to die,” added the OC.

Speaking when donating the police unit, Vice Chairperson for the Chinese Community, Yanwu Shen said they thought of constructing the facility as one way of honouring their corporate social responsibility.

Shen said this is one way of strengthening security, and has since pledged for more support on issues to do with security. He said the Chinese Community have been plying their business in Malawi for over 20 years.

He therefore asked the police to work hand in hand with them in the fight against crime.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together”, he stressed.

In his speech, the Station Executive Committee Chairperson Mussa Lambart also commended the Chinese community for the timely donation. He therefore asked others to emulate what their Chinese counterpart have done.
