Drug theft leaves stakeholders worried

A call has gone out to authorities to address the issue of drug pilferage in public hospitals in Malawi.

A strategic stakeholder, Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi has raised the concern in a statement that MIJ Online has seen.

The concern comes at a time public hospital continue to register an increase in theft of drugs.

Speaking to MIJ Online, William Mpute President of the society expressed worry as reports are indicating some health workers being implicated in the theft of the drugs.

Mpute has observed the malpractice is impacting on service delivery in public health facilities.

“The Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi is concerned with the rise of drug theft in the country. The recent one was reported on 22nd of December in Lilongwe. This is worrisome at a time the country is battling the cancer of stock-outs of drugs in public facilities.” he said.

While commending government for coming up with interventions aimed at curbing the vice, Mpute has recommended authorities step up its measures to completely end malpractice.

” PHASOM would also like to ask the general public to play its role in fighting against drug theft. The masses have a pivotal role. People should not provide the market for stolen medicines, we should at all times get our medicines from certified premises. Medicines are
not sold in a bag or corner place, there are registered premises to buy medicines. Without the market for stolen medical supplies, the vice will likely decrease. PHASOM further asks the general public to report anyone suspected of stealing medicines or of illegal vending of medicines. Public medicines belong to us as they are purchased with tax payer’s money; we have the responsibility to ensure they are used as intended.” he said.
