Escom faulted over end user money collection

The Natural Resources Committee of Parliament has accused the power utility body ESCOM of operating illegally on collection of money from end users.

This comes as ESCOM continues to manage the single buyer system despite Malawi establishing the Power Marketing Limited – PML to deal with the buying and selling of energy.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Werani Chilenga Chairperson of the committee said ESCOM is still clinging to the single buyer license and collecting money from customers illegally.

According to Chilenga, ESCOM is even failing to use the money it collects effectively as it is failing to pay EGENCO and support its operations.

He said the committee has reached a consensus with stakeholders involved in which they have agreed that come 31st December this year, ESCOM must hand over the single buyer license to PML.

This means ESCOM will only transmit power to end users and not collecting money.

And Speaking on behalf of ESCOM Board Chairperson, Overton Mandalasi, said ESCOM has taken note of the recommendation and will soon release a statement to notify Malawians on the same.
