A renowned agriculture expert has praised a decision by government to set the minimum price of maize at 500 kwacha per kilogram.
The analyst, Leonard Chimwaza make the remarks at a time government has released minimum farm gate prices for strategic crops for the 2022-2023 season.
This follows a statement signed by Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Dickxie Kampani, which stipulates that minimum prices of some commodities will be as follows; Maize is K500 per 1Kg, Polished Rice is at K1000 per 1kg while un-polished Rice is at K500 per 1kg, Cotton is at K580 per 1Kg, Shelled groundnuts will is at K950 per 1kg, pure Beans is at K700 per 1kg and Soya Beans is at K800 per 1Kg.
Meanwhile, government has set the minimum price for polished rice at 1000 kwacha per kilogram and for unpolished rice at 500 kwacha per kilogram.
Commenting on the development Chimwaza noted that the prices were justifiable as farmers were likely to reap huge benefits from their investments.
