Government reviewing laws to implement stiffer punishments on polluters

The Ministry of Local Government is reviewing the 1998 Local Government Act with the aim of imposing stricter penalties on individuals and companies found guilty of environmental pollution caused by improper waste management practices.

Mbawala: These are vital decisions.

This decision comes in response to ongoing concerns about the persistent contamination of groundwater, particularly in urban areas, attributed to the improper construction of pit latrines.

Speaking to MIJ Online Douglas Mkweta, Director of Local Government Services emphasized the government’s push for Malawians to adhere to proper guidelines when constructing pit latrines.

At the moment, Albert Mbawala, Chairperson of the parliamentary committee on legal affairs, has urged the Ministry of Local Government to expedite the amendment process of the Act to impose tough penalties on individuals contributing to the country’s pollution through improper waste disposal methods.
