Young people key to reforestation and solving climate change

A renowned climate activist,Noel Kanthenga has underscored the significance of engaging pupils in reforestation ventures as means for mitigating the effects of climate change.

Kanthenga: Pupils need to know at the earliest stage.

The advocate has made the appeal amidst ongoing efforts aimed at promoting reforestation activities in the country.

Kanthenga, who is the founder of Nooshy Climate Initiative, made the sentiments during a tree planting exercise at Chilinde and Chiwoko Primary schools in the area of Traditional Authority Tsabango in Lilongwe.

Speaking to Mij online, the activist said the nation has a responsibility to encourage children and young adults to become active stakeholders in reforestation efforts.

The pupils being engaged in a pep talk.

According to him, this is essential to prevent them from bearing the brunt of the cliimate crisis and ensure that Malawi makes significant headway in the fight against climate change.

The advocate has also called for effective implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures, arguing that this is the only solution to solving the climate crisis.

Meanwhile ,evironmental patron for Chiwoko Primary school, Gladys Mkanda has pledged to encourage the pupils to nurture the trees to maturity to promote a greener and climate resilient Malawi.

Earlier, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change disclosed that it is targeting to plant 34 million tree seedlings during the 2023/24 National Forestry Season which commenced in December last year.
