Govt interns demand increase in allowances
Government interns have petitioned the ministry of labor advocating for an increase in stipends provided by the government, aiming to raise them from 80, 000 Kwacha to 250,000 kwacha.
According to a letter addressed to the principal secretary in the ministry of labor dated 19th April 2024, the interns have taken the initiative due to the escalating cost of living in the country, which is adversely impacting their ability to perform effectively in their roles.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Wallace Benjamin, a representative of the interns, expressed optimism for a favorable response from the ministry of labor stating that an upward adjustment would greatly support them in their endeavors.
He added that raising the stipend would not only ease their financial burdens but also signal the government’s dedication to nurturing and investing in the talents of the youth.
In response, Nellie Kapatuka, spokesperson for the Ministry of Labor, mentioned that the ministry will comment later on the matter.
