The government is seeking 700 million United States dollars (About MK 1 Trillion) to boost domestic fish production, aiming to decrease reliance on fish imports from neighboring countries.
The sentiments have been made as the Department of Fisheries aims to elevate production from 200,000 to 729,000 metric tons, generating a yearly revenue of $1 billion by 2033.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Hastings Zidana Director of Fisheries , ministry of natural resources and Climate change, cites poor infrastructure, limited knowledge, low private sector involvement, and the use of genetically unimproved breeds as obstacles.
Zidana emphasizes the need for the investment to overcome these challenges and achieve the goal of self-sufficiency in fish by 2033.
