Government plans to relaunch the infamous Salima-Lilongwe water project on January 25, 2024, works that have dragged for about seven years.
The initiative aims to pump water from Salima to the central region, with the government contributing 30% of the funds and the private sector investors providing the remaining 70%.
Parliament passed a bill earlier this year, enabling the government to access loans up to 105 billion Kwacha from local banks to finance the project.

Elias Chimulambe, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, revealed that an agreement has been reached with Contractor Khato Civils and South Zambezi Joint Venture to kick off the project in January next year.
Chimulambe assured that the government aims to secure 105 billion Kwacha by January, representing 30% of the total project budget.
In response, CEO of Khato Civils, Mongezi Mnyani, affirmed readiness to initiate the project, which faced a seven-year delay due to various issues.
