Govt sets sights on diaspora in mining course

The Ministry of mining says Malawians in diaspora are crucial in the development of the country’s mining industry.

This comes as the ministry is expected to hold its first ever virtual mining investment forum specifically targeting Malawians living abroad with an aim of presenting to them various opportunities in the mining sector.

Chikoti: We need to spread the net wider.

According to Mphatso Chikoti information officer in the ministry of mining and also chairperson of the organizing committee of the event, Malawi has various minerals that can be used in promoting industrialization in line with the country’s 2063 development vision.

“We have industrial minerals, energy minerals, agro-minerals and we want Malawians to invest in these minerals. And most recently there is a green revolution going on all over the world and as a country we have green minerals such as lithium which is used in making batteries and we want Malawians to take part in these mineral ventures and have a sense of ownership” observed Chikoti.

Chikoti further said the expertise and access to resources at the disposal of Malawians in diaspora can also assist in ensuring that the country exports finished mineral products instead of the current setting in which most minerals are exported in their raw form.

The Virtual Diaspora Session for the 2024 Malawi Mining Investment Forum which will be conducted of July 13th 2024, further seeks to help the diaspora community understand recent policy and legal reforms that have been established to facilitate growth and investment in the extractive industry.
