The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives CDEDI has spoken against the overreliance on foreign contractors to work on various projects at the expense of local contractors.
CDEDI has made the remarks following its interaction with officials from Northern Region Water Board where it has been established that the utility supplier awarded contracts of the Karonga and Nkhata-bay projects to Chinese companies without emphasizing on the need to subcontract 30 percent of the project to local contractors.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Sylvester Namiwa, executive director of CDEDI said the developing is costing the country in foreign currency hence the need to see to it that local contractors have a lion’s share of public works thus ensuring their growth and that of the nation.
Namiwa has further wondered how the country trusts foreigners whose interests is just money with a huge responsibility of building the nation.
