Authorities have admitted of a continued struggle in providing food for inmates in the country’s prisons.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Chimwemwe Shaba, Spokesperson for Malawi Prison Service has said suppliers are unwilling to supply maize to prisons as they are demanding more money that what initial estimates can allow.
Shaba said for the past weeks, authorities have been purchasing Maize from Agriculture Development Marketing Corporation but the situation has worsened as the grain trader has not been performing to the fullest.
According to Shaba, the situation is worrisome as it has affected the lives of inmates as many are spending days without food.
