The Malawi Prison Services has acknowledged the access of phones by inmates who are duping the public and defrauding them of money worthy millions.
The confession was made when the service, presented to parliament an update on the progress made to address the mobile money fraud orchestrated by prisoners in the country.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Chimwemwe Shaba, public relations officer for the Malawi Prison Service attributed the development to an influx of cell phones and Simcard in prisons due to lack of hi-tech security gadgets such as call jamming machines as well as door scanners.
Shaba added that the department has dismissed five officers for being involved in smuggling of phones in prisons with four others on interdiction pending conclusion of their offences.
On his part, Michel Hebert, Chief Executive Officer of Telekom Networks Malawi said has advised Malawians not to give out information to anyone regarding the financial accounts.
