Malawians to give inputs on plans to hike electricity tariffs

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority – MERA has disclosed plans to conduct public hearings on the proposed electricity tariff hike between the month of January and February this year.

Kachaje: People will have their say.

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) last year proposed a 99 percent electricity tariff hike which awaits MERA’s approval.

The increase covering a four-year period would mean tariffs being raised by K187.98 per kWh, a hike from the current K104 per kWh if approved.

Speaking after meeting the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, Henry Kachaje Chief Executive Officer for MERA said they are planning to get views from Malawians on the proposed tariff and they are hopeful that the process would be completed by next month February.

On his part, Mark Botoman Chairperson of the Committee said MERA needs to take time on the process to ensure that a larger number of people is consulted.
