Authorities have disclosed that they requiring 10 billion kwacha to operationalize the long awaited workers compensation fund.
This comes as the fund which was approved by parliament 24 years ago under labor act is yet to start working for safety and protection of workers.
Meanwhile, Malawi has today joined rest of the world in commemorating day for safety and health at work under the theme “The impacts of climate change on occupational safety and health”.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Agnes Nyalonje Minister of Labour said they are now looking for ten billion so that they can fully operationalize the long overdue workers compensation fund.
Nyalonje has further indicated that they are developing a National Occupational Safety and Health Policy in a quest to address breadth of issues and also to strengthen available legislation.
Meanwhile, The Executive Director of the Employers’ Consultative Association of Malawi, George Khaki believes that the workers compensation fund is a way to go to ease financial burden that employers fall in when need be to assist their employees.
And on his part, European Union EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach urged the government to foster implementation of the legal instruments so that they assist to promote decent works in the country.
