MLW drills media on safeguarding

The Malawi Liverpool Welcome Trust has emphasized the need for more efforts meant to ensure safety of people at every levels of their operations including the media when writing stories.

This was said during an engagement with the media today in Blantyre where Elizabeth Mkutumula, MLW Safeguarding Officer said the aim was to enhance caution in media operations.

She said with the media power at hand, there is a demanding need for practitioners to trade carefully.

‘’There are situations in which we must always know how to present a particular group of the society given the power they hold. What we say may enhance the difference and add vulnerability on people, ’she said.

Mkutumula stresses a point.

She added: ‘’ Our assertion as MLW is that safeguarding is a responsibility shared by all individuals directly and indirectly involved in their work and this includes the media,’’.

According to Mkutumula, the MLW stands on its ground to ensure that even with its confines, all members of staff, stakeholders and so forth as safe at all times.

On his part, one of the attendees Lloyd Chitsulo of the Nation Publications Limited said the training was crucial as it refreshed his mind on such crucial topic.
