The Malawi Revenue Authority has admitted that the nation is losing out as much revenue due to continued use of unchartered routes by some traders who subsequently do not pay taxes.
The admission was made when officials from the institution appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on defence to highlight measures under implementation in curbing such crimes.
In an interview with MIJ Online, John Bizwick, Commissioner General for the Malawi Revenue Authority has said through the unchartered routes the traders are able to bring in as much commodities that are only valued while in the country.
However, Bizwick has said in response to the situation, the authority has developed various interventions to exercise safety in borders and innovations such as an online tax payment system Msonkho Online.
Meanwhile chairperson for the committee Ralph Jooma said there is need of putting in place measures that will ensure proper revenue collection hence the committee will lobby for more support to help the authority access Modern equipment to address the issues.
