Over two hundred elephants for translocation to Kasungu park

The department of wildlife is expected to translocate 400 animals from Liwonde National park to Kasungu game reserve including 250 elephants.

The translocation which is expected to start on 27 June to end July is the second after the first one saw elephants transferred to Nkhotakota game reserve which is run by African Parks.

However, this is the first for elephants to be transferred to a government run Wild life reserve.

Speaking to the media , director for the department Brighton Kumachedwa said apart from 250 elephants the move will also see 100 buffalos, 120 Impala’s and 25 Sable antelopes among other animals to be relocated.

Kumchedwa further said the transferring of the elephants will also address over population of the Jumbos in Liwonde National park which has over 600 out of the required 300 elephants.

Commenting on the translocation Patricio Ndadzera country representative for IFWAL an organization providing technical assistance to government on the running of Kasungu National park – The move will help the country to build its tourism industry in the area of wildlife.

He added that the organization and government have sensitized the communities on the coming elephants to minimize the people animal conflicts.

The project is expected to cost over 1 billion kwacha.
