Parliament has backed calls for salary increments by nurses and midwives in the country.
The National Organization of Nurses and Midwives and the Physician Assistants Union of Malawi are demanding a 44 percent salary hike following the weakening of Kwacha by the same percentage.
Meanwhile, the labor unions have given authorities 7 days to address their demands failure which they will stage a sit-in.
Chairperson for Parliamentary Committee on Health, Dr Mathews Ngwale has backed the calls, describing it understandable.
However, Ngwale has told MIJ Online that there is need to ensure that the margin of the demanded hike is reasonable saying 44 percent is too much.
