Police in Kasungu have arrested an 18-year-old woman identified as Bertha Chipeta for throwing into pit-latrine newly born child.
According to police the incident occurred at Chambala Village in the district.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Joseph Kachikho Public Relations Officer for Kasungu Police Station said that the baby was noticed by landlord who went to toilet within the compound when he heard the baby crying in pit-latrine.
According to Kachikho after landlord alerted some members of the community they managed to dug and rescue the newly born baby girl and it was discovered that the suspect was the one who dumped the toddler into the toilet after delivery.
Kachikho added that Chipeta who hails from Chiwale village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwase in Kasungu District will soon appear before court to answer the charge of concealing birth of a child contrary to section 232 of the Penal Code after treatment.
