Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri has hailed vendors for their relocation to the newly constructed by-pass market in Lilongwe.
The development comes following demolition of the Wakawaka market after expiration of a vacation notice issued last month by Lilongwe City Council.
During a visit to the site, Phiri thanked the vendors for occupying the new space and credited President Peter Mutharika for providing direction on the shift.
Speaking to MIJ Online Phiri assured vendors that work on improving the new market would begin immediately, while following proper procurement procedures.
He added that once completed, the bypass market would serve as a model for other trading centers in the country.
Meanwhile Phiri disclosed that the government will now move to restore order in urban trading spaces and address related issues such as theft of street lights and trading in undesignated areas.
