The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda is expected to make a ruling on Tuesday afternoon concerning activist Bon Kalindo’s plea to suspend and vacate his warrant of arrest.
The Malawi Police Service obtained this arrest warrant through the same court that had previously charged and released Kalindo on bail.
Kalindo faces charges related to disseminating information likely to incite fear and alarm among the public during his appearance on Rainbow Television on December 20, 2021.
According to Police, Kalindo claimed to have knowledge regarding the individuals responsible for the tragic incidents involving people with albinism, but when pressed to reveal their identities, he declined to do so.
In an interview with MIJ Online Stanley Chirwa, Lawyer for Kalindo said he has made two applications owing to the manner in which the arrest warrant was obtained and executed.
“The accused person has been arrested at the court premises for two occasions, for reasons known to the state the accused has been has been take twice to two different districts (Dwangwa in Khotakota and Mtakataka in Salima) we don’t know why,” said Chirwa.
Chirwa further challenged that these arrests appear to be an effort to frustrate Kalindo, and suggested that the motives behind such actions are well understood by the state authorities.
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) detectives on Friday, September 15, 2023, arrested Bon Kalindo for his failure to honour bail conditions in a case of Publication of false news likely to cause fear and alarm to the public (Court Case Number 1447/21) which he stands accused of.
According to police, Kalindo last honoured this bail condition on April 26, 2023.
