Police in Mzimba District have arrested Happy Sakunda, and Mphatso Phiri for allegedly being found in possession of counterfeit fertilizer at Chanthomba in the district.
It is reported that police had an exercise after being tipped by patriotic citizens that the two were offering for sale bags of fertilizers suspected to be fake.
On their arrest, the accused were found with eleven bags of fertilizer weighing 50 Kilograms each. The said bags of fertilizer have been seized waiting for examination by Malawi Bureau of Standards.
Sakunda and Phiri will appear in court after all police enquiries are done.
Meanwhile, police have warned farmers to exercise strict caution whenever they want to buy fertilizer from vendors. Police further warn scrupulous vendors who want to dupe farmers by selling counterfeit fertilizer that they will face the law.
Sakunda comes from Benjamin Moyo Village, Traditional Authority Mbelwa while Phiri hails from Kulera Village, Traditional Authority Chindi both from Mzimba District.
