Civil servants demand 12 percent pay hike

Civil Servants have asked the Malawi government to increase their salaries by 12 percent, MIJ Online has learnt.

This follows a meeting that representatives of the Civil Servants Trade Union and Teachers Union of Malawi TUM held last week with the government negotiating team over the salary increment.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Charles Kumchenga, secretary general for TUM- said initially the civil servants proposed a 20 percent increment but government negotiated to slash the other four.

However, Kumchenga said the civils servant has resolved to seek for a 12 percent salary increment and are now waiting for a response from government.

According to Kumchenga, they also proposed that civil servants should start receiving increased salaries month end of April or May.
